The Limit Where Minds Meet

The month of solidarity ends where the next month will begin. In order to exist, Camus says, man must rebel. We have spent July on that half of the sentence, on the bond revealed when we refuse what crushes people. But now he adds the warning that changes everything. Rebellion must respect the limit it discovers in itself.
This is the hinge of Camus’s whole ethics. The same revolt that binds us to each other can, if it forgets its limit, turn into a new tyranny. The rebel who fought against cruelty becomes cruel in his turn, sure that his cause excuses anything. History is full of it. Liberators who became jailers. That is why rebellion must find the line it will not cross, even in its own name, even for its own good ends.
And look where Camus locates that line. It is a limit where minds meet, and in meeting, begin to exist. The boundary is not a wall between people. It is the place where I recognize that you are as real as I am, that your dignity limits what I may do, just as mine limits you. The limit is not the death of solidarity. It is solidarity’s fullest form.
Today, as this month closes, find the line you will not cross even to serve something you believe in. That refusal is where you and another person truly meet. Tomorrow we begin to trace those limits in earnest.
